Leigh Spence, “Just a Thought” — Networking 101

At the Voices Homestyle Happy Hour on Friday, we celebrated the value and fun of networking.  Voices board member Karen Miller, who shared her home and her amazing networking skills with us, helped break the ice with activities that encouraged the women to meet one another.

One game we played was bingo, where relatively unknown facts about attendees were on a bingo card and we tried to find which women each one matched. It was a great icebreaker and made it easier to make introductions, but I have to admit… I was a big loser at this game.

The thing that makes me decent at my job in life as a high school counselor makes me bad at networking bingo. I had a hard time moving from one person to the next. I wanted to hear people’s stories about their unknown factoids and about their lives in general. As a result, I didn’t work the room very well. But I enjoyed so much the extended time I spent with the women I did meet.

I really do love the stories of people’s lives. I am inspired and challenged by what I learn from the people I meet. Friday, I enjoyed the diversity of experiences and the varied passions that were evident in this group of women, many of whom I had never met.  What leads us to our careers, what we love outside of our jobs, the journeys that we all take — this is what interests me and I had such a wonderful time learning little bits about the women I met.

Thanks to all the women who joined us for our first Homestyle Happy Hour. Stay tuned for our next one in October. I look forward to hearing your stories!
